I have always loved musical comedians. I grew up listening to Weird Al Yankovic and have loved Stephen Lynch since the moment I first heard his songs. There are several funny artists that most people are unfamiliar with; they only make rare appearances on television or lurk in the recesses of YouTube, hoping to be discovered. This is a list of my favorite relatively new or yet to be real-world famous musical comedians. Just a quick warning, some of the songs I provide links to contain profanity or vulgar language!
1. Bo Burnham
One of the youngest musical comedians, at the time he began his career, Bo Burnham has been building on his intelligently snarky repertoire of hilarious songs that not only make you laugh, but make you think as well. I have been listening to his music for a few years now and I still manage to catch a previously unheard play on words nearly every time I listen to one of his songs. He has a phenomenal ability to twist and manipulate words in the most creative way I have ever heard. I strongly recommend heading over to his YouTube channel and giving him a listen.
2. Lonely Island
If you watch Saturday Night Live, chances are you know who Lonely Island is. These three guys, fronted by Andy Samberg, have released some hilarious songs which often feature highly acclaimed artists such as Michael Bolton and Justin Timberlake. They tend to be raunchy and sexually explicit in the most humorous of ways. While many of their songs are outright ridiculous, they are all very catchy and even if your first impression is that it’s not for you, you will most likely find yourself singing the goofy chorus.
3. The Key of Awesome
If you love parodies, you absolutely must start following The Key of Awesome! They are a wonderfully funny group of people ranging greatly in age who, fairly accurately, imitate all of the pop, rock and rap artists they make fun of. They rip on the trashiness of Kesha, Taylor Swift’s habit of writing songs about guys she dates as well as Eminem’s newer, somber songs. I love a good parody, and I listen to these songs over and over again and still find them quite amusing, you should check them out!
4. Epic Rap Battles of History
One of my all time favorite YouTube channels is Epic Rap Battles of History. They take two prominent figures from history (or occasionally the present) and pit them against each other. They have approximately 30 videos at the moment ranging from Sherlock Holmes vs. Batman (see link above) to Obama vs. Romney. They are all hilarious and show valid points from both sides. They are incredibly entertaining and generally give me a pretty good laugh. They act out all of their battles, which make them fun to watch as well as enjoyable to listen to!
5. Alex Farnham AKA Damitsgood808
I honestly don’t know if I’m more fascinated by his musical comedy or by his appearance. Without costumes and makeup he looks like a young clone of Jim Carrey, yet he can pull off looking like every Johnny Depp character in history. Along with music videos he also does “Captain Jack’s Video Diary,” which is hilarious and well performed. He is very creative and possesses more authentic looking costumes than one could ever hope to have. Watch a few of his videos; he’s really an incredibly funny guy. You can also catch him on Epic Rap Battles of History every now and then.
6. Jon LaJoie
I love Jon LaJoie. He sings and raps about being completely mediocre, which is a refreshing change from rapping about “bitches” and how much money you have. All of his videos are filled with hilarity, it’s hard to watch just one; I generally end up watching 5 or 6 in a row. He has a song about the infamous 2 Girls 1 Cup video set to the tune of a love ballad. Anyone who has seen the original will get a huge kick out of his take on it. LaJoie also performs mock commercials as well as phony dating ads, several of which have made me laugh so hard it brought tears to my eyes. If you like to laugh, and I know you do, give him a listen.
7. Garfunkel & Oates
I saved one of the best for last! Garfunkel & Oates are two dorky girls, Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci, who sing about their relationship mishaps, guys who piss them off and growing up. The vast majority of their videos are simply the two of them seated in a living room while Kate plays the ukulele as they both sing, but they do have a few professional videos, which are pretty darn awesome. Almost all of their songs are rude or offensive, which is sort of my kind of humor, so I love them. If you judged a book by its cover you would never expect the songs they sing to come out of their mouths, but they are incredibly talented, unbelievably witty and 100% worth listening to!
If you find yourself craving some new musical comedians to listen to, explore some of the artists I have listed. I honestly have music playing through a minimum of 85% of my day and a great portion of what I listen to are these comedic geniuses, especially if I’m in a bad mood. Nothing cheers me up when I’m down like word play, puns and parodies! Who is your favorite comedic musician?
