Sandra Bullock has been heavily involved in raising funds for hurricane relief in New Orleans after the Katrina disaster. As well as this charity work, she also unfailingly comes across as a lovely person, never has anything mean to say, and adopted a little boy who needed a home.

2. George Clooney

There's no doubting that Georgeous George has a pretty decent exterior. But that's not all there is to him. He's involved in a hefty amount of humanitarian work, having co-founded an organisation that aims to resolve crises in places like Darfur. George's involvement isn't just window-dressing either – he does his research and knows what he's talking about.

3. Mickey Rourke

Mickey Rourke gets a lot of flak in the press for the results of bad plastic surgery (apparently due to injuries sustained in his boxing career). But while Mickey may no longer have the handsome face of his youth, he is definitely beautiful on the inside. After working in Romania, he has donated a vast amount of cash to build an animal shelter. What a cool guy!

4. Beyoncé

It would be easy to dislike someone who seems to have it all – looks, wealth, success and a happy personal life. Yet Beyoncé never puts a foot wrong - there is no scandal attached to her name, she works hard, and refused to use her baby to make money. So she seems like a pretty decent person.

5. Oprah Winfrey

Sure, Oprah's made more money than most of us can ever imagine, but she's put a lot of it to good use. In fact, she may have donated as much as $300 million to good causes, including $50 million in just one year! Among her causes are opening a girls' school in South Africa – recognising the importance of education in giving people a chance in life.

6. Paul McCartney

He might get a bit irritating at times, but Paul McCartney has been showing for decades that he is beautiful on the inside. McCartney turned to vegetarianism when it was far less fashionable than it is now, has done a lot to promote the cause, and also does a great deal more for charity.

7. Bill Gates

Sure, we all like to moan about Bill Gates at time, and the stranglehold Microsoft has on computing! But the fact remains that Gates hasn't just sat back and counted the proceeds. He has created the world's largest charitable foundation, worth an amazing $40 billion, which works to help health programs in developing countries.

8. Hilary Duff

It's easy for a rich celebrity to just write a check and show off how generous they are. But Hilary showed that she is beautiful on the inside by considering just where her money could do the most good. When Hurricane Katrina hit, Hilary donated 2.5 million meals, and has also done a lot of work for other charities. She also asks her fans to donate canned goods when they come to concerts.

Some people are lucky enough to be beautiful on the outside, but that kind of beauty has a time limit. We've all come across people whose character isn't quite as nice as their appearance, and being beautiful on the inside is much more worthwhile.
